Fracking and Earthquakes

Energy and Earthquakes: A Whole Lot of Shaking Going On
Huffington Post (blog)
Could it be that the increase in earthquakes is specifically tied to the growing practice of using hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to release oil and gas from shale and other tight formations? And what about the high-pressure injection of wastewater ..

Researchers find fracking, not earthquake machines, causing earthquakes ...
Scrape TV
Hayes did acknowledge that the quakes were often small and caused little damage and that the evidence could not conclusively connect the shakers to fracking. It's unclear whether or not earthquake activity will increase, or whether or not the ...

By lambert strether, who blogs at Corrente.
This clip from TV Asahi is a lucid explanation of the biggest ongoing news story in the world today: The catastrophic consequences if an earthquake strikes the Fukushima Dai-Ichi No. 4 power plant before its spent fuel rods are moved to safe storage place, a process that will not even begin until December 2013, and could take years. It aired March 8, 2012 on “Morning Bird,” a mainstream Japanese news and information TV program.

Confirming carbon's climate effects

Confirming carbon's climate effects

Boston MA (SPX) Apr 13, 2012
Harvard scientists are helping to paint the fullest picture yet of how a handful of factors, particularly world-wide increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide, combined to end the last ice age approximately 20,000 to 10,000 years ago. As described in a paper published in Nature, researchers compiled ice and sedimentary core samples collected from dozens of locations around the world, and

Tel Aviv, Israel (SPX) Apr 13, 2012
Rapidly dropping water levels of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the earth's surface heralded for its medicinal properties, has been a source of ecological concern for years. Now a drilling project led by researchers from Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University reveals that water levels have risen and fallen by hundreds of meters over the last 200,000 years

What Triggers a Mass Extinction?

Pasadena CA (SPX) Apr 13, 2012
The second-largest mass extinction in Earth's history coincided with a short but intense ice age during which enormous glaciers grew and sea levels dropped. Although it has long been agreed that the so-called Late Ordovician mass extinction-which occurred about 450 million years ago-was related to climate change, exactly how the climate change produced the extinction has not been known

Rising Pacific seas linked to climate change: study

Sydney (AFP) April 13, 2012
Sea levels in the southwest Pacific started rising drastically in the 1880s, with a notable peak in the 1990s thought to be linked to human-induced climate change, according to a new study. The research, which examined sediment core samples taken from salt marshes in southern Australia's Tasmania island, used geochemistry to establish a chronology of sea level changes over the past 200 years
